Dan,
Have enjoyed your SEO Fast Start book and the linking videos. I have some questions:

1) What's the least expensive way to benefit from your experise fro my sites, which are currently wannabes.

2) How could I get into search resluts rapidly with a new or existing sites for breaking keywords based on current events?

3) Do links from free websites weigh differetnly from paid websites?

4) Are the links on all websites found and counted, are are some excluded altogether for low pagerank sites or pages?

Additional questions:

1. What do you think of the different extensions .com vs .info or .org?

2. Could you recomend a refernece on alternatives to using lots of parameters in the url to keep track of state in the session? I unfortunately did this not realizing it would cause search placement problems, and need to rewrite it.

1) The least expensive approach would be to read the book and follow the process step by step, beginning with keyword strategy.
2) Blog about it, and have something to say.
3/4) Links that are indexed (the page carrying the link is indexed) have a chance to count… if the search engine knows that a site is selling text links there's a good chance that all the links will be filtered out, not just the paid links.

Just use domain TLDs as they were intended to be used:
.com domains are for commercial sites
.org domains are for organizations
.info is a relatively new domain for "informative" sites
Misusing the TLDs isnt an approach I would recommend.

There are a number of approaches you can take to dealing with sessions.

The main idea developers should understand is that you do not need to track a session at all, until the visitor does something (e.g. adding a product to a shopping cart) that requires you to track the session state.

If creating a tracked session is always triggered by a form submission then you don't have to worry about search engine spiders because they don't submit forms.

The simplest approach (OSCommerce and others do this) is to simply not throw parameters to known search engine user-agents (Googlebot, MSNBot, Slurp, etc.) - this doesn't prevent others from linking to pages with session variables, so you would also want to redirect (301) any spider requests to a URL with the session variables removed.

Some day in the future, you will have a flying car, I will have a personal jetpack, and the search engines will give us some way (robots.txt or sitemaps protocols most likely) to tell them which variables they should simply ignore.

This would solve a lot of problems, and a recent survey for Google Webmaster Tools (http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/webmaster-console-features/) actually included this on the list of possible enhancements, so we know it's actually on someone's radar @ Google.

Until that glorious future arrives we'll have to fix this problem with code.
